Books and reading promotes life long learning

By Hilda Wayne of PNGRCS

LIBRARY and literacy promotes and sustains life long learning and children must be taught how to love and value reading of books and know how to read and write.

Children with special disabilities at the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Special Education Centre in Port Moresby had a busy Book Week recently with their teachers helping them get to know more about the value of books.
Trainee teachers for the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) who are currently on a month’s training at the centre have been assisting teachers there for the children to have a memorable book week.

PAU team leader Mr. Peniamina Cowley said as part of the Book Week celebrations, the children and staff will visit the PAU library and learn about the use of a library.
“These are children with special needs so we must be very patient with them. We are learning a lot too from the children,” said Mr. Cowley.
The school had a grand closing of the Book Week where they imitated book characters and were witnessed by the entrants in the Miss PNG Red Cross Charity Quest 2005.

With the theme: Library and Literacy, Promoting and Sustaining Life Long Learning, teachers at the centre have been working with the children and emphasising the need to use a library and read more books.
“We are teaching the little ones rhymes and riddles and the kids are also trying to dress up as book characters so we are preparing them to have a good closing on Friday,” said Mrs. Rose Launch, Teacher-In-Charge of the Elementary Pre-School at the centre.

The centre is run by the PNG Red Cross Society and caters for children with all disabilities except blindness.

…ends…

Students and staff at the Special Education Resource Centre were hard at work preparing for the National Book Week celebrations recently.
